Colorado
In Colorado, take your pick. Ample variety exists from the San Juans, near Durango, to the other worldly West Elks, the Maroon Bells and Gore Ranges. Try the Collegiate Peaks or Flattops after boredom sets in. Pack into the Sangre de Cristos if you like to walk straight up from the trailhead (these mountains reach down into New Mexico, where the best parts make up the Pecos Wilderness).
This is sure enough high country, calling for proper altitude considerations. Over fifty peaks exceed 14,000 feet. Wildest weather we have ever seen, in every month.
Our personal favorite, after all these samplers, is probably the view of Squaw Pass, in the Weminuche wilderness, from the little hanging valley a mile or so west of the Pass. This is high up on the Continental Divide Trail (CDT). We have been there on successive years, and lately one of the guides has mandated a rendezvous with this glorious place. This is a full cheerios trip.
