As an avid Texas outdoorsman and former college athlete, I’d tried my hand at a number of outdoor hobbies over the years, but none have provided me with the challenge, reward and excitement that I found in alpine backpacking. For me it is the sense of adventure, the physical challenge, the test of your will against the elements of Mother Nature that hooked me on this hobby that I hope to enjoy for many years to come.
My first backpacking adventure with Middle Fork Outfitters(”MFO”) was to the “Winds” in central Wyoming. From the day I committed to going, the team at MFO went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that I was ready both mentally and physically. Every detail of the trip was planned in advance. From the logistics of getting to and from our destination, to the gear, to the food, to the day trips…the folks at MFO had me prepared for everything. And being a CPA by trade, I appreciated the meticulous planning and fore-thought they put into my trip.
That first trip exceeded all my expectations…it was truly unforgettable! We ate like kings, we climbed peaks and ridges, fished crystal clear mountain lakes, enjoyed a mid-afternoon snow storm and saw increidble alpine beauty. Along the way, MFO made sure that not only did I witness spectacular scenery, but they made sure that I learned from my experience. I was taught how to properly read a compass and a topographical trail map. I learned how to analyze the sky for potential changes in the weather, how to read animal tracks and to look for navigational cairns (trail-markers). I was also taught how to plan day hikes, what to look for in locating a good base camp and to constantly be aware of my surroundings. In addition to all the seriousness, the guides at MFO were always full of good humor, positive attitude and encouragement. It was a fabulous trip from start to finish and one that I will never forget!
If you’ve ever wanted to go on an adventure into the backcountry and experience the beauty of North America that you never knew existed, I highly recommend going with MFO. You’ll get more than just an adventure; you’ll get a wonderful experience with memories that will last a lifetime. And who knows, you might become hooked, like me!
Thanks, guys!
