Utah
Almost no one has heard of the High Uintas, to the delight of the Salt Lake city locals. This is the largest east west running range in the United States. Particularly on the steeper, shorter, wetter north side, a few miles from IH-80, you can find deep red sandstone canyons cut by blue streams, and repleat with huge wildflower meadows and moose. Visit Park City, maybe, on the way out, but only briefly.
We once chased a herd of 50 or so elk all the way to the snow capped pass. “I had no idea” is the operant comment after a first visit to Red Castle. This area drains the Green River on the north, and various Oregon trail remnants are in the area.
